Celebrating 25 years of our community on the Kootenai River

Our beloved town of Bonners Ferry turns 125 years old April 1st!

Bonners Ferry began with Edwin Bonner who built a ferry to help gold prospectors and Native Americans cross the Kootenai River and travel to Canada. With the discovery of gold in Canada and the prime trading location, Bonners Ferry became a boom town. It became the center of the lumber and farming community in the Kootenai Valley, with the Bonners Ferry Lumber Company becoming one of the largest lumber mills in Idaho.

The village of Bonners Ferry was incorporated on April 1st, 1899. We love this town and are proud to be a part of it!

Got a free afternoon? Let’s get an easy hike in, and it's only a few minutes from Bonners Ferry! Snow Creek Falls is only a mile and a half round trip with 200 ft elevation gain and two of the prettiest waterfalls in the county. The trailhead is just a few miles south of the Kootenai Wildlife Refuge and it's an easy drive into the mountains. The trail splits halfway down and you can explore both the lower and upper falls. The best times to visit this trail are April through October. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash. If you have visitors in town, it’s one of the best little North Idaho hikes to show off to them.
